How buying cannabis in Hat Yai works now

Since 26 June 2025 cannabis flower has been a “controlled herb” under the Thai Traditional Medicine Act. A shop may sell it only to someone holding a PT 33 prescription from an authorised practitioner (a doctor, a Thai traditional medicine practitioner or another prescriber certified by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine). The prescription is valid for up to 30 days, a licensed outlet can sell up to a 30-day supply, and since January 2026 it must keep a DTAM-trained staff member on site whenever it is open.

Rules for visitors in Hat Yai

• Public smoking that creates a smoke or smell nuisance can be fined up to 25,000 THB, with up to 3 months in prison, under the Public Health Act 1992.
• Crossing into Malaysia. Cannabis is illegal in Malaysia and Singapore, with severe penalties. Do not carry any cannabis or cannabis product across the Sadao or Padang Besar crossings.
