Nok Air Cannabis Policy: Can You Fly With Cannabis in 2026?

Nok Air has no cannabis policy. Not a ban, not a permission. We read the airline’s dangerous-goods page and its published baggage conditions on 28 July 2026, and neither contains the word cannabis, marijuana, กัญชา, hemp or narcotic.

If you searched for “Nok Air cannabis policy” and landed on an article confidently describing one, the article is describing something the airline has never published.

What Nok Air Actually Publishes

Nok Air defines dangerous goods as “items or substances that may endanger the safety of the aircraft or guests onboard” and instructs passengers not to pack them in cabin or checked baggage. The categories are the familiar ICAO and IATA hazard classes: explosive and flammable items, corrosive and toxic substances, sharp objects, firearms and weapons.

Its unacceptable-baggage rule refers out to the same international framework: Nok Air reserves the right to refuse carriage of baggage, or items found in baggage, that are not properly packed, or that are likely to endanger the aircraft, persons or property on board — including anything specified in the Dangerous Goods Regulations of ICAO and IATA.

Cannabis appears in none of that, and it was never going to. Dangerous-goods rules govern physical hazards to an aircraft. A legally controlled plant that is neither flammable nor corrosive is a legal question, not a dangerous-goods question, which is exactly why the airline’s rules are silent on it.

The Search-and-Refuse Clause That Does Apply

Nok Air’s published baggage conditions contain a clause that matters more here than the dangerous-goods list. The airline reserves the right to require a search or scan of you and your baggage “for the purpose of determining whether you are in possession of or whether your baggage contains any unacceptable or prohibited items,” and states that if you refuse to comply, “we reserve the right to refuse carriage of you and your baggage without refund of fare to you and without any other liability to you.”

It also reserves the right to search your baggage in your absence if you are not available.

That clause names no substance. It is a general power, and it is the mechanism by which any airline-level problem with cannabis would actually arise — not through a written cannabis ban.

Silence Is Not Permission

Three parties decide whether your cannabis flies. Only one of them is Nok Air:

1. Thai law decides whether your possession is lawful in the first place.
2. Airport security and the police run the Don Mueang checkpoint. They are not airline staff.
3. Nok Air decides whether to carry you and your bag.

A written yes from the airline settles the third question and nothing else.

The Legal Baseline for Any Nok Air Domestic Flight

Since 26 June 2025, cannabis flower has been a controlled herb (สมุนไพรควบคุม) under the Protection and Promotion of Thai Traditional Medicine Knowledge Act B.E. 2542 (1999). It was not returned to the Category 5 narcotics list — it sits in its own category, licensed through the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

To possess cannabis flower lawfully anywhere in Thailand, Don Mueang included, you need a valid PT 33 prescription (ใบสั่งยา ปท. 33) from a licensed Thai practitioner holding cannabis-medicine certification. It is valid for up to 30 days. Foreign prescriptions and medical cannabis cards mean nothing here.

Cannabis and hemp extracts above 0.2% THC remain Category 5 narcotics under the Narcotics Code — a stricter regime than the controlled-herb rules covering flower. Oils and concentrates carry more exposure than flower, not less.

Two penalties that are not the same penalty

• Smoking in public, or creating a nuisance through the smell, falls under the Public Health Act B.E. 2535 (1992) — reported at up to 25,000 THB and up to three months’ imprisonment. A terminal is a public place.
• Selling cannabis without a prescription falls under the Traditional Medicine Act B.E. 2542 — up to one year’s imprisonment and a fine of up to 20,000 THB.

Why Nok Air Is Structurally Lower-Risk

Nok Air is one of the most domestically focused carriers in Thailand. Its network out of Don Mueang runs to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Hat Yai, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani and a long list of secondary cities.

That matters for one specific reason: the most common way travellers get into serious trouble is by putting cannabis on an international sector without realising it. On a network that is mostly point-to-point domestic, that mistake is harder to make.

It is a structural advantage, not a policy. Nok Air does operate some international services. Check your route before you pack.

International Flights: No Exceptions

Carrying cannabis across a Thai border is a serious criminal offence. Your PT 33 authorises possession inside Thailand and nothing beyond it. It carries no weight at an international departure gate and none at the customs desk on arrival. Flower, pre-rolls, edibles, tinctures, oils and every extract are covered.

Inbound is restricted too. Airports of Thailand’s published health-product rules for travellers prohibit importing cannabis-based or hemp-based foods, disallow cosmetics containing cannabis or hemp, and prohibit supplements containing cannabis or hemp. Narcotics need prior authorisation from the Narcotics Division of the Thai FDA.

Practical Checklist for a Nok Air Domestic Flight

1. Confirm both airports are in Thailand. Nok Air is mostly domestic but not exclusively.
2. Check the PT 33 expiry date before you leave for Don Mueang.
3. Carry the original prescription plus the dispensary receipt; photograph both as backup.
4. Pack flower in checked baggage. Cabin baggage is screened item by item — and remember Nok Air can search checked baggage in your absence.
5. Keep the quantity consistent with the prescription.
6. Avoid unmarked edibles, oils and concentrates. Officers cannot test THC content at the checkpoint.
7. Do not smoke or vape anywhere in the terminal.
8. Ask Nok Air in writing if you want carrier-level certainty, and keep the reply.
9. Allow extra time. Any find means a delay, prescription or not.
