Thai Vietjet Cannabis Policy: Can You Fly With Cannabis in 2026?

Thai Vietjet has no published cannabis policy. We read the airline’s dangerous-goods page and its baggage and terms pages on 28 July 2026. None of them contains the word cannabis, marijuana, กัญชา, hemp or narcotic.

That is a genuine finding rather than an omission on our part, and it puts Thai Vietjet in exactly the same position as every other Thai carrier: no ban, no permission, and a general right of refusal behind both.

What Thai Vietjet Actually Publishes

The airline’s dangerous-goods material is heavily weighted towards battery safety, which is where most current airline attention sits. It covers lithium cells, lithium-ion batteries and spare batteries, power banks and e-cigarettes: power banks, spare batteries and e-cigarettes must be carried on your person or in the seat pocket rather than in the overhead bin on affected routes, are strictly not allowed in checked luggage, must be individually packed or in original retail packaging to prevent short circuits, and anything above 100 Wh but within 160 Wh needs airline approval at check-in. It also prohibits using or charging idle devices on board.

Beyond that it refers to the standard hidden dangerous-goods categories — the recognised hazard classes covering explosives, gases, flammables, oxidisers, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive material and corrosives.

Cannabis is not there, and structurally it never would be. Dangerous-goods regulations govern physical hazards to the aircraft. Cannabis is a legal question, not a hazard class.

One caution specific to this airline: Thai Vietjet Air Joint Stock Co., Ltd and Vietnam’s Vietjet Air are separate operations sharing branding and a common website structure. Restricted-item lists differ between them. Make sure the page you are reading is the Thai one before you rely on it.

Silence Is Not Permission

Three parties decide whether your cannabis flies, and only one is the airline:

1. Thai law decides whether your possession is lawful in the first place.
2. Airport security and the police run the Suvarnabhumi checkpoint. They are not airline staff.
3. Thai Vietjet decides whether to carry you and your bag, under the ordinary carrier right to refuse where refusal is necessary to comply with applicable law.

A written yes from the airline settles the third question and nothing else.

The Legal Baseline for Any Thai Vietjet Domestic Flight

Since 26 June 2025, cannabis flower has been a controlled herb (สมุนไพรควบคุม) under the Protection and Promotion of Thai Traditional Medicine Knowledge Act B.E. 2542 (1999). It was not returned to the Category 5 narcotics list — it has its own category and its own licensing route through the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

To possess cannabis flower lawfully anywhere in Thailand, Suvarnabhumi included, you need a valid PT 33 prescription (ใบสั่งยา ปท. 33) from a licensed Thai practitioner holding cannabis-medicine certification. It is valid for up to 30 days. Foreign prescriptions and medical cannabis cards have no legal effect in Thailand.

Cannabis and hemp extracts above 0.2% THC remain Category 5 narcotics under the Narcotics Code — a stricter regime than the controlled-herb rules covering flower. Oils and concentrates carry more exposure than flower, not less.

Two penalties that are not the same penalty

• Smoking in public or creating a nuisance through the smell falls under the Public Health Act B.E. 2535 (1992) — reported at up to 25,000 THB and up to three months’ imprisonment. A terminal, a gate, a cabin: all public.
• Selling cannabis without a prescription falls under the Traditional Medicine Act B.E. 2542 — up to one year’s imprisonment and a fine of up to 20,000 THB.

Smoking or vaping anything on board is separately prohibited under aviation rules and treated as a safety offence.

The Thai Vietjet-Specific Risk: The Vietnam Routes

Thai Vietjet operates a mixed domestic and international network out of Suvarnabhumi, with domestic services to destinations including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Udon Thani and Hat Yai, and international routes including services to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s drug laws are among the harshest in the region. Combine that with the fact that Suvarnabhumi handles domestic and international departures under one roof, on the same carrier, and the potential for a costly mistake is real.

Carrying cannabis across a Thai border is a serious criminal offence before you even reach the destination’s laws. Your PT 33 authorises possession inside Thailand and nothing beyond it. It is worth nothing at an international departure gate and nothing at the customs desk on arrival. Flower, pre-rolls, edibles, tinctures, oils, every extract.

Check every sector on your itinerary. If any of them crosses a border, carry nothing.

Inbound is restricted too. Airports of Thailand’s published health-product rules for travellers prohibit importing cannabis-based or hemp-based foods, disallow cosmetics containing cannabis or hemp, and prohibit supplements containing cannabis or hemp. Narcotics require prior authorisation from the Narcotics Division of the Thai FDA.

Practical Checklist for a Thai Vietjet Domestic Flight

1. Confirm every sector on the ticket is domestic. Suvarnabhumi mixes both.
2. Check the PT 33 expiry date before leaving for the airport.
3. Carry the original prescription and the dispensary receipt.
4. Pack flower in checked baggage. Cabin baggage is screened item by item.
5. Keep the quantity consistent with the prescription.
6. Avoid unmarked edibles, oils and concentrates. Officers cannot test THC content at the checkpoint.
7. Do not smoke or vape in the terminal.
8. Ask Thai Vietjet in writing if you want carrier-level certainty, and keep the reply.
9. Allow extra time. Any find means a delay, prescription or not.
